Time and Date should be set through the Polycom Boot Server. This article is for historical reference only.

The date and time one the phone can be set by synchronizing it with an NTP server (Network Time Protocol server). This can be done by logging into your Polycom phone through a web browser. Log into the IP address of the phone:
http://192.168.0.102 for example.

  1. Choose the "General" tab
  2. Default username: "Polycom"
  3. Default password: "456"
  • Choose "Time"
  • SNTP Server: pool.ntp.org
  • GMT Offset: -5 for EST
    • -6 for CST
    • -7 for MST
    • -8 for PST
  • SNTP Resync Period: 86400

Choose "Submit" to submit your settings and reboot the phone.

There is one potential issue with Polycom phones and the time settings: The DHCP server will ALWAYS over-ride the time settings from the WWW interface. Therefore, if the time is not correctly set on your DHCP server (the server/router - where the Polycom phone obtains it's internal IP address) then the time will be incorrect on the phone itself.

If the above settings do not correct reset the time settings for the phone, then the phone is obtaining it's time settings from the DHCP server. You must then, check the DHCP server for the correct time.

setting Polycom 501 time

Just got a new Linksys router (rv042) and now our time is incorrect on all our phones. The time is correct on the router and the phones are still set up correctly and have been rebooted multiple times. I set the router to use the NTP server of pool.ntp.org with a EST time zone.

The router is showing the correct time but the phones are still incorrect at 5 hours ahead as if the offset is not being used.

This all began when we replaced the router.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

Linksys RV042 - no SNTP

The Linksys RV042 does not provide SNTP (Simple Network Timing Protocol). The Polycom phones will therefore not obtain the correct time from them and will default to Greenwich Mean (EST+5).

There are two options:

1.) Purchase a different router - d-links usually work well.

2.) Obtain configuration files from your hardware provider and edit sip.cfg to tell the phone to use the internal NTP settings you provide in the WWW interface. That is beyond the scope of this document and per Polycom reseller agreement, can only be provided by your hardware provider.

Linksys RV042 and Polycom phones

The DHCP server on the Linksys RV042 is broken in that it gives out a GMT offset (option 2) of "0.0.0.0"

This overrides the Polycom phone and configuration file settings unless the "tcpIpApp.sntp.gmtOffset.overrideDHCP="1" is set to one. Older Polycom firmware(<2.0) does not accept this setting. The only solution for older firmware phones is to set a static IP address on the phone.

Any way to override this on the phone itself?

I had the problem many months ago at our main office with an RV042 so I moved all phones to a boot server which supplies DHCP and gives a correct GMT offset. This explanation solves much mystery.

Now however I have a site (a home user) with RV042 and of course the problem is back again. Is there any way to set up a 320 or a 330 in the phone itself to ignore the bogus GMT offset returned by the RV042? All phones are running 3.1 firmware.

I could set up the phone with a static IP (thereby ingoring DHCP) but that would prevent phones from being easily moved around (e.g., when an employee is working offsite for a time).

Hi

I might be inclined to agree with your hypothosis if you can explain why the 2 Grandstream phones I have and all the PC's connected to this router manage to get the correct date and time.

RV042

At my home office, I have an RV042 serving as DHCP server for 3 windows laptops, a MacBook, two servers, a PolyCom 320, a GrandStream HT502 and a Vonage Linksys ATA. It is *only* the Polycom which shows the incorrect time; it displays GMT, as I described in my earlier post. As pointed out in the previous post, all the other devices have correct time.

I suspect it is rare that a DHCP client requests the item "GMT offset" from its DHCP server, but the Polycom phone is such a client. The bogus "0.0.0.0" response to the request for that item then results in a GMT offset value of zero, and so the phone displays GMT.

I have been watching for RV042 firmware updates for months for Linksys/Cisco to fix the problem but apparantly nobody there cares. The exposure is small because, again, most clients don't ever ask the DHCP server for this item, but it is still an RV042 bug. The other features of this router make it a good choice for me, so I live with it, but would prefer it to be fixed.

Hi! We had same problem on our polycom 500-series phones, while our 300-series switched over automatically. When I logged into the IP address of the 500-series using the info above, I noticed our DST stop date was set for Nov 4th. I switched it to Nov 1st and submitted, and the phone is perfect now.
